Each module contains several interactive lessons that demonstrate ways to think and talk about data from a statistical perspective.
Who is Data Literacy 101 For?
The lessons begin with an exploratory approach to data analysis that is accessible to:
Beginner students, or those students who may be unsure of their quantitative skills
More experienced students who might know how to calculate a mean or another statistic, but who don't yet grasp why underlying ideas like Center and Spread matter when reasoning about data.
All students who need to build a language for talking and reasoning about data
Teachers wishing to refresh their own data skills
How Should Data Literacy 101 be Implemented in the Classroom?
Data Literacy 101 lessons are interactive and can fit anywhere in your curriculum. Ideally, when students first start to work with data they will do the lessons in Module 2 (Variability).
We recommend that students and teachers work through lessons together at first, to ensure that students start working with Tuva Datasets with a common understanding of tools and language for talking about data as evidence.
Why should I use the Data Literacy 101 Modules?
The modules are sequenced in a progression that is based on Common Core Math Standards. Lessons begin with the concept of variability in data, which is introduced in the sixth grade standards, and build from there.
Eventually lessons will be available using data from a choice of subject threads, so your students can build data literacy while exploring disciplinary core ideas.
